I'd really like to see reporters determine the profits made from any financial wrongdoing and express these so-called record breaking fines as a percentage of the ill-gotten gains. If firm can make a billion for themselves and their clients and then pay a million in finess, that's 0.1%; nothing. Why would they not do it again? The fine should always be 100% or more of the profit. Biblical justice for theft is to repay 10 times what was stolen.

The idea of an emergency financial bailout of any major "corporation" — one which may underpin military security or food security or financial security of the entire nation or world — that concept could be seen as acceptable in a certain isolated sense. The entire Cold War was envisioned as a huge 45 year Bailout for the entire economy, Military Keynesianism. It did not "cost" Americans, it was paid to Americans via the Govt purchasing expensive arms production from corporations.
That's how actual Capitalism in the real world works — it contains "communist" elements, like it or not, always had that. The term "communist" here having little to do with Marxism and more to do with a partially at least loosely-centralized govt-managed economic system — this is what US Capitalists demanded since the mid-late 1800s.
The main problem — Matt understands — is why these bailouts are needed, how the bankers destroyed the corporations from the inside by complicated methods of looting using risk (not straight embezzlement), and the fact that while we might not want to punish the soulless institutional corporations — except to put reasonable harnesses and controls and feedback mechanisms on this entire system — we also have failed to credibly punish the actual human beings for criminal behavior.

bottom line.. If you  want to be a criminal, don't think small. Be someone who takes billions of dollars or kills millions of people, or defrauds 100s of thousands of people, because petty crime doesn't garner the respect of the mafia that is our current government and judicial system.

Obama grovels before power just like all Presidents, there is very little difference between Republicans and Democrats here.  Until we "Get Tough on Crime" with the billionaires we will still be ruled by these oligarchs who are ruining our economy and ruining our planet.

Remember those Black Panthers that intimidated voters at the Philly polling site? I was certain he was going to prosecute those guys, but not. He did nothing about Mormon polygamists who traffic underage girls, and he did nothing about doctors who prescribe dangerous drugs, or pimp taking teenage girls over the state line.

The NYPD, DHS, and the Justice Department, "handled" the Occupy Movement for the bankers and corporations , the payback was merely an eventuality.

yeah, the too big to fail and jail should be prosecuted and the citizens of the united states should file a civil suit against Holder. He was hired to do a job for the citizens of this country and he didn't do his job so we should at least get his salary/pay or whatever back?
