Not saying that smoking isn't bad for you, or that tobacco industry should be allowed to influnce governments as much as they do, but this lady seem to have some bad priorities and also have reached some conclusions based on insufficient data.

Having an open fire stove in your home is as unhealthy as smoking hundreds of cigarettes every hour, leading to lung and throat cancer. This is the largests cause of death in most parts of Africa. If less Kenyans get addicted to nicotine, it would perhaps help them stay healthier in some distant future, but as it is, and will be for a foreseeable future, stopping smoking will not make any noticable difference in how many Kenyans get throat and lung cancer. There is valid economic reasons for the Kenyan government to keep Kenyans from getting addicted to nicotine, but there is no health reasons for them to do so (other then malnutrition caused by farm land being used for tobacco production instead of food production, or people having less money to spend on food, because they buy cigarettes instead). Talk about those reasons, instead of having a discussion based on the false pretense that increased smoking would effect the cancer rate among Kenyans.

I don't know about the current situation in poor parts of America, but decades ago I did some number crunching based on a report about smoking in the 1970's USA. I combined this data with some data from other US government reports around same year. At that point in time, it was almost only lower class manual workers who smoked cigars in USA. I found that coal miners, industrial workers and rural workers was healthier in areas with many cigar smokers (I can only speculate about as to why). My conclusions about cigarette smoking was less controversial, areas with many cigarette smokers was unhealthier, with more cases of throat and lung cancer, but the correlation was much weaker than the correlation with coal mining. It was also slightly weaker than the correlation with precence of heavy industries and about the same as the correlation with population density (my guess is that more populated areas had more pollution caused by traffic). Being a rural worker also increased the risk of getting lung or throat cancer significally (pesticides? dust?). My point, don't claim that smoking is the only significant cause of throat and lung cancer without ruling out other causes. If poor areas in USA have more lung and throat cancer, it may also be because of bad labour conditions or other environmental issues.

Anyone who has done ANY research on Pence knows the type of person he is. He is as bad as Trump with the exception that he knows how to play the political game. In some ways, he is even more dangerous than Trump. I wonder how many people who voted for Trump and Pence did any research on this man. He's scary. Tobacco is only ONE of the issues we should have with Mr. Pence.

I was totally with her until she mentioned that e cigarettes still need further study. There are countless studies that show it is vastly safer than tobacco based products. I've not seen one decent study that shows otherwise. I would equivocate her statement to conservatives who believe the science is still out on climate change.

big tobacco is a monster though, so thank you for your work against them.

To take money for supporting companies that manufacture addictive products that kill is an immoral act. The leading Immoral leaders that kill are Mike Pence and Mitch McConnell. I would ask how you can live with yourself but I know that the answer would be: very well.

How much is a pack of cigs in Africa? Countries should raise the price until the Africans can no longer afford it. Then Big tobacco will leave.

So instead of intimidating these poor African countries with the good'ole colonial muskets, guns, cannons, armadas, fake treaties, they are sending in their 'big guns' , in the form of hyper-powered , wealthy corporate lawyers/ counsels. Such a human, trustworthy, wholesome thing to-do.

    1) trump's "health and human services secretary" has stock in cigarette companies…
    2) trump's vice president doesn't believe smoking cigarettes is bad for you…
    3) trump's energy secretary thought his job would be working for oil companies…
    4) trump's epa secretary sued the epa 11 times to reduce regulations, trump has given dirty fuel the green light on everything and wants to kill all environmental regulations, he has withdrawn america from the paris climate accord.
    5) trump's education secretary is dismantling public education and pandering to less successful charter schools, she is also supporting lenders to further indebt students.
    6) trump's hud secretary believes being poor is the fault of poor people.

Why do liberals care? Let these idiots die out
    1. Republican counties have been ravaged by opioid addiction yet Republicans do not want to provide them with health care to deal with this
    2. Gun owners are highly likely to kill one of their own and they don't want gun control laws
    3. Pollution and global warming impacts poor whites than any other demographics yet they deny climate change
    4. Poor whites are dire need of education and retraining yet the Republicans don't believe in that.

I say let it be. I as a liberal will be fine I am educated, have health insurance, live in clean part of the country. I am ok with Republicans destroying their constituence

Funny the WHO is just as corrupt. Both big tobacco AND big pharma lobby against the best innovation to basically eliminate deaths from tobacco: e-cigarettes.
The WHO is probably a puppet for the pharma industry and advice countries to ban or "regulate" vaping, even though it's clear that it has a large potential for harm reduction (95% saver than smoking). But the corrupt or hysteric bastards at the WHO don't care.
I wish democracy now would do a report on this scandal. An innovation that can save millions of lives from smoking gets methodically smeared in the media.

So many people are able to switch from smoking to ecigarettes easily. But instead of being hailed they get demonized and banned.

We should sell Tronald Dump the worst deal in history, so he and his gluttonous tribe can learn how they are a cancer to life. It's time we troll the guy who cannot believe he won the presidency. After the administration falls from espionage, we'll make this deal and he'll learn to respect the poorly educated, rather than lie from afar. Where you gunna run Tronald?

I grew up in Costa Rica in the early 90's and Phillip Morris ran the country. I was buying smokes at 13, no problem. Every rodeo, festival or gathering was sponsored by big tobacco.
These people that run and profit off of tobacco should be jailed.

nicotine is more addictive than heroin, and there are plenty of politicians & CEOs ready to cash in on people's addictions, whether it's via tax hikes, or addiction treatment, or cancer centers. therein lies the problem. order nicotine out of cigarettes & watch Big Tobacco sink like a stone.
